The University of Tübingen and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) jointly seek Two PhDs in Soil Science (Hydrogen Isotopes in Organic Matter and Clay Minerals)
Research of the groups of Prof. Oelmann (Geoecology, University of Tübingen) and Prof. Wilcke (Geomorphology and Soil Science, KIT) within the DFG project Stable hydrogen isotope ratios in soil constituents is expected to yield new insights into the formation of organic matter and clay minerals. Our previous research revealed a strong relationship between the isotopic signature of hydrogen in soil organic matter and rainfall. The underlying mechanisms and the question whether such a relationship exists for clay minerals as well are yet to be uncovered. The latter could serve as novel means for relative dating of paleosoils. The PhDs will be in charge of analyzing stable isotope ratios in organic matter (with Prof. Oelmann, University of Tübingen) and in clay minerals (with Prof. Wilcke, KIT) both requiring a proper consideration of the proportion of hydrogen being exchanged with ambient air moisture. The tasks include field campaigns and laboratory work, the latter including the development of innovative methods. Presentation of the results at national and international conferences and publication in peer-reviewed international journals is expected.

Master in Geoecology, Geoscience, Physical Geography, Landscape Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Agricultural Sciences, Biology, Geochemistry, or Environmental Chemistry or related disciplines
Kenntnisse und Fähigkeiten
Dynamic, serious, and motivated researcher with Master in Geoecology, Geoscience, Physical Geography, Landscape Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Agricultural Sciences, Biology, Geochemistry, or Environmental Chemistry or related disciplines. The successful candidate should have extended knowledge of biogeochemical processes in ecosystems with a particular focus on stable isotopes in the environment and laboratory experience in wet chemistry. Good communication skills and commitment to interdisciplinary research particularly focusing on environmental issues are required. Fluency in English and German is required. The position will be open until qualified candidates are identified. We particularly encourage female applicants to apply for this position. Gehalt und Beschäftigungsverhältnis
The research will be carried out within a 3-year project (starting in January 2017) and will be conducted in Tübingen and Karlsruhe. Payment will be according to the German standard tariff (65% TVL-E13).
